Matthew contracted hepatitis whilst in India in 1976/77. He said he had eaten "bad meat" there. His brother stated that Matthew had gone to India overland in 1976, and by the time he was brought back to England by his father in June 77, the disease had spread to his pancreas, resulting in his death from pancreatitis.
